Theme: the message, or lesson, that the author wants you to learn from the story.

THEME	MAIN IDEA
Tells the lesson the reader should learn	Tells what the text is mainly about
Short phrase; A couple of words	One sentence
Does NOT name characters	It uses names of characters.

Themes are usually hidden inside a story. The reader needs to infer the overall message the author is trying to convey.

Examples:
The Three Little Pigs --- Hard work pays off.
Little Red Riding Hood --- Don't talk to strangers.
