Figurative Language

Notes for the Week of November 10

Figurative Language

Imagery:  the use of language to create vivid pictures in readers' minds.

Sensory Details:  sight, taste, touch, hearing, and smell

Figurative Language:  compares things that are NOT alike.

Two types of Figurative Language
1.  Simile:  compares two unlike things by using  linking words such as like, as, and resembles.

example:  The cafeteria ladies were as busy as bees.

2.  Metaphor:  compares two unlike things WITHOUT using linking words.  A metaphor says that one thing IS something else.

example: The stars are sparkling fireworks in the sky.
